How the calculation works

Hourly rate = annual salary ÷ 52 weeks ÷ hours worked per week.

Worked example

At $60,000 a year and 40 hours a week, the hourly equivalent is $60,000 ÷ 52 ÷ 40 = $28.85. Weekly gross pay is $1,153.85, biweekly gross pay is $2,307.69, and average monthly gross pay is $5,000.

Understanding your hourly equivalent

An annual salary can be hard to compare with an hourly offer. Turning both offers into the same unit helps you see whether the headline numbers really differ. Enter your annual gross salary, not the amount deposited into your bank account, and your usual scheduled hours per week. The answer is an equivalent rate, not a promise of hourly overtime eligibility.

The default 40-hour schedule produces 2,080 hours per year. A 35-hour week produces 1,820 hours. The same salary divided by fewer hours creates a higher hourly equivalent. If you regularly work more hours than your contract says, enter the hours you actually expect to work to get a more realistic comparison.

Salary, paid leave, and real working hours

A salaried worker may receive paid holidays and vacation even when not physically working. The basic conversion still spreads annual pay across 52 weeks because the annual salary includes those paid weeks. To compare the value of time you actually spend working, you can estimate your working hours separately and divide salary by that number, but keep that calculation distinct from the standard 52-week equivalent shown here.

An exempt salaried employee generally receives the same base salary each pay period even if some weeks are longer. Nonexempt salaried workers may qualify for overtime, depending on their duties and applicable law. Salary by itself does not decide exemption status, so do not treat this converted hourly rate as an overtime calculation.

Comparing an offer responsibly

Suppose one offer is $60,000 with a 40-hour schedule and another pays $30 per hour for 40 hours a week. At full-time hours the hourly role is $62,400 annually, before any overtime or unpaid time. The $2,400 difference is only part of the story: paid time off, insurance premiums, retirement matching, commuting expenses, and job stability can change the value of either offer.

Weekly pay is annual salary divided by 52; a typical biweekly amount divides by 26. Monthly is annual salary divided by 12, an average rather than a literal paycheck unless your employer pays monthly. If your employer pays twice per month, divide by 24 instead. These are gross amounts, so set aside room for taxes and deductions when budgeting.

For a negotiated raise, try several possible annual salaries while leaving your schedule unchanged. Each extra $2,080 a year adds exactly $1 to the hourly equivalent on a 40-hour, 52-week schedule. That relationship makes a proposed raise easier to picture and gives you a common language when comparing with local hourly pay data.

If your hours vary week to week, consider running several scenarios rather than trusting a single average. A busy-season schedule of 50 hours and a quieter schedule of 35 hours will produce very different hourly equivalents at the same salary. Compare offers using an expected annual total of hours whenever possible. Also ask whether the salary covers on-call duty, travel, or regularly scheduled weekends: those obligations can make an apparently generous salary less attractive when measured against the time it asks of you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you convert an annual salary to an hourly rate?

Divide annual salary by 52, then divide by the hours you work each week. For 40 hours a week, divide by 2,080 annual hours.

What hourly rate is a $60,000 salary?

$60,000 divided by 2,080 hours is about $28.85 per hour for a 40-hour week.

Does this include overtime pay?

No. This converts a fixed annual salary into an equivalent hourly amount; it does not add overtime or determine whether you qualify for overtime pay.

How many work hours are in a year?

At 40 hours every week for 52 weeks, there are 2,080 scheduled hours. Your actual worked hours may be lower with paid leave or higher with overtime.
